Founded in 1984, the Southeast Arizona Area Health Education Center (SEAHEC) is a nonprofit organization serving residents of Pima, Santa Cruz and Cochise Counties. SEAHEC's mission is to improve health care through the recruitment, diversity, distribution and retention of culturally competent health professionals in rural and underserved communities. Recognized as a local collaborative partner for improved health, SEAHEC strategies include advocacy, workforce development, academic-community partnerships, border binational health initiatives and local capacity building for community development. SEAHEC provides ´training-of-trainers´ modules, group facilitation, and logistic and translation services to other agencies and organizations in Southern Arizona.
Core program areas include: Youth Development for Future Health Leadership, Health Professions Student Placement, Continuing Education/Medical Education; and Border Binational Health Programs addressing issues unique to our Arizona-Sonora border region. SEAHEC is part of the Arizona AHEC Program, a statewide network of 5 centers, each with responsibility for a designated geographical region. The Program is administered by the University of Arizona, with oversight from the Arizona AHEC Commission. Working with valued partners, including local hospitals, community health centers, academic institutions and schools, SEAHEC is helping improve health care in rural and underserved areas of Southern Arizona.
